Understanding Zakat

How Zakat works

The essentials of this pillar of Islam.

What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is an obligatory form of charity — 2.5% of qualifying wealth — designed to purify your assets and support those in need. It applies to savings, investments, gold, silver, and business inventory held for one lunar year.

Who pays Zakat?

Zakat is due on every Muslim adult whose net qualifying assets exceed the Nisab threshold (roughly the value of 85 grams of gold) for one full lunar year. The obligation applies regardless of income level — only net wealth matters.

When to pay?

Zakat is calculated on your wealth after it has been held for one full lunar year (hawl). Many people choose Ramadan for its increased rewards. You can pay in advance or set up regular payments throughout the year.
